Jan Morris Reveals her Favorite Cities

She fields this question in the Guardian: What is her favorite of them all?

Dear God, what a question! To my mind cities are distillations of human life itself, in all its nuances, with all its contradictions and anomalies, changing from one year to another, changing with the weather, changing with history, changing with the state of the world, changing above all in one’s own personal responses. How can I have a favourite? Sometimes I prefer one city, sometimes another. Inconstancy governs my responses to cities—fidelity in personal matters, promiscuity in civic affairs.

Morris does have a ready answer, though, when asked about her least favorite city: Indianapolis. (Via @ben_coop)

I love that quote. Love love.

I also think Jan Morris’ essay about Ottawa (in her Canadian “City to City” collection, and also in “The World”) is maybe the best thing ever written about my hometown.

I absolutely agree. I love traveling and visiting new places. Even though I’ve found a few places that I will call ‘favorite places’ I still wanna explore new cities and countries. I’m still looking for the ultimate destination to be find. My next trip is for New Years where I’m off to Dubai. http://www.eshores.co.uk

Anyone who travels would have to agree that it’s hard to choose a favorite out of many different types of places.  We’ve found that when we rent a timeshare (we use http://www.redweek.com) we have the luxury of time to really immerse ourselves in the city, and for that reason we’ve come to love Paris, London, and, yes, even New York!
